The process of creating a garden design is as important as the final product. Of course, you want your garden to be attractive, but it is also important to maintain its functionality and livability. Your design should match the needs of your home and not make it look overcrowded or over-crowded.
Know what you are going to be needing before you start. Do you want a full length covered walkway that will lead to your patio?
You need to consider whether your garden is going to need to remain open all year round. If it is going to be subject to extreme weather conditions then a shady garden may be a better option than a bright, sunny one.
Next, you’ll need to decide how much space you have available for the structure you wish to build. This will depend upon the size of your home.
If you have a lawn or a formal lawn, you will probably need to have a garden on a smaller scale. However, if you live in a semi-detached home or even a single-story home then your garden will almost certainly need a larger area to grow. So consider this when planning your garden design.
You may wish to think about whether your garden is going to be an extension of your home or it is going to be a separate place apart from the rest of the house. In either case, you will need to think about which areas of the garden you wish to incorporate into your design.
Areas of land that face the outside should be considered if you are going to enclose them with your garden. The best place to do this is where the ground slopes downwards – so it can be difficult to enclose areas that are not sloping.
For those areas of land where you don’t have any slope, you could lay down artificial hedges. There are many types of hedges to choose from — some are very common, such as juniper, and will usually work well, but there are other hedges that will require more care if you are going to use them in your garden design.
Certain areas of your garden that are closest to the edge may need to be mown. A hedge will make sure that your grass is always kept in check, so if you are going to use the hedge for the garden design you will need to consider its size and height.
Decide how far away from your home the hedge should be. For instance, if you live in a semi-detached home, then you might want to place the hedge only on the side nearest to your home and leave the rest of the hedge at the back of your property.
If you don’t like using a hedge then you can use an external hedge, although they may be more expensive. An external hedge will sit on top of your existing lawn, so they won’t pose as much of a problem, but if you are looking for a hedge that will be placed at the back of your property then it’s probably best to use an external hedge as the garden design.
