A recent article published by the New York Times talks about using apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash to ease gum disease. According to the Times, “In recent years, researchers have begun to explore how the simple acidity of apple cider vinegar might be effective against several common illnesses, including gum disease.” Though we thought it was time for a review of the facts on this topic…let’s look at this objectively:

There is no good evidence that apple cider vinegar will prevent gum disease. If it did prevent gum disease it would be a very different story, but it doesn’t. There is no real reason to use it for this purpose other than as a way to add a touch of flavor to something that is already tasty.

There are many types of anti-disease mouthwash available on the market that use vinegar as an ingredient. Using apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash is not an effective way to use this ingredient.

If you have gingivitis, or periodontal disease, or some other disease related to your teeth, using apple cider vinegar to brush your teeth is not recommended. This can leave you susceptible to disease in your mouth. There are many other things you should be brushing and flossing with as well.

Even if you do not have gum disease, using apple cider vinegar to brush your teeth does nothing to prevent tooth decay. It is not a way to keep your teeth free of decay, as it may actually damage them.

If you do choose to use vinegar as a mouthwash, try to find a cleaner that is made for your toothbrush. A toothbrush with a metal shaft that is also blunt will strip the tooth enamel off of your teeth. Some toothpaste may also strip the enamel.

Apple cider vinegar should never be used with other acidic ingredients. An example is a lemon juice, which is too acidic to use with apple cider vinegar. If you don’t like it, you can use water or another acidic beverage to rinse out your mouth.

Though it sounds like a great idea, there is no scientific evidence that using apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash will help your overall health. In fact, it is possible that it may make your health worse. While it is better to take medications that offer little benefit than nothing at all, if you feel as though they will help, then why not try.

If you are suffering from periodontal disease, or gum disease, or any other type of disease that can cause problems with your teeth, you need to be proactive. Take care of your teeth, and take steps to prevent any further disease from developing.

If you have had the misfortune of growing up with cavities in your teeth, you know the importance of brushing twice a day, and the bitter taste of the apple cider vinegar. Most people are not aware of how harmful it can be to use this type of mouthwash.

It seems that there is no real evidence to suggest that using apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash will do anything positive for your mouth. It is highly likely that it will damage your teeth and leave you at risk for gum disease. If you want to use it for this purpose, try something that will not harm your teeth and gums, such as your toothbrush.
